About

Mizuki Shigeru, creator of GeGeGe no Kitaro and Japan's great chronicler of yokai, lived in Chofu from 1959 until his death in 2015. The city made him an honorary citizen. Tenjin-dori shopping street, running north from the station's north exit towards Fuda Tenjin Shrine, has been decorated with small bronze statues of Kitaro and his gang perched on benches and pedestals. Look out for Kitaro and Medama-oyaji (the eyeball father), Nezumi-otoko, Neko-musume and others. The street itself is an ordinary local shotengai of bakeries, cafés and shops, and at the end is Fuda Tenjin, the old shrine that inspired Kitaro's home forest. It's a gentle 20-minute yokai hunt that adds a playful touch to a Jindaiji day.
