About

Tatsumi Shinmichi grew out of the street stalls that gathered at Monzen-nakacho after the war, and it still feels like 1960: a narrow lane under hanging lanterns lined with doors leading into rooms that seat five to ten people. Some are mama-san snack bars with karaoke, others are proper izakaya serving oden, stewed offal or sashimi, and a standing bar near the entrance works on meal tickets. Regulars are mostly local office workers and Fukagawa natives, and the mood is warm rather than intimidating, though, as everywhere, some places prefer regulars. Monzen-nakacho's wider area is one of Tokyo's best for affordable drinking, but this alley is its distilled form, and it makes a natural end to a day at Fukagawa Fudodo and Tomioka Hachimangu.
