About

Locals in Monzen-nakacho treat Fukagawa Fudodo as their own, but few tourists find it even though it is a two-minute walk from the station. The new main hall, faced in Sanskrit characters, sits beside a 19th-century old hall that survived the war. Several times a day monks perform the goma fire ritual: drums thunder, sutras are chanted, flames leap from the altar and worshippers hold bags and wallets over the fire to be blessed, anyone may sit in and watch. Upstairs, the Inori no Kairo prayer corridor is lined with about 9,500 small crystal Fudo Myoo figures lit from behind, a startling, almost futuristic space. On the 1st, 15th and 28th the approach street, Fudo-dori, fills with festival stalls, and its old shops sell Fukagawa-meshi, clam rice, and senbei.
