About

"Art is explosion!" Taro Okamoto (1911–1996) lived and worked in this house, designed by his friend Junzo Sakakura, a disciple of Le Corbusier, for over 40 years. The studio is left as it was, with canvases, paint pots and brushes, and the salon is filled with his colourful sculptures and a life-size figure of the artist. Upstairs, rotating exhibitions explore themes in his work; Black Dynamism runs Jul 17 to Nov 23, 2026. The small front garden is a jungle of banana plants and ferns from which his wild-eyed sculptures peer out, and a small cafe overlooks it. For his giant mural Myth of Tomorrow, head to Shibuya Mark City.
