Shoin Jinja & Shoin-jinja-dori 松陰神社・松陰神社通り商店街

A shrine to the revolutionary teacher Yoshida Shoin, joined to the Setagaya Line by a short, old-school shopping street that has quietly become one of Tokyo's nicest small-shop strips: indie coffee, bakeries, a bookshop-bar and a craft-beer stand among the old tofu and rice shops.

About

Yoshida Shoin taught many of the young samurai who brought down the shogunate. He was executed in 1859, and his followers later reburied him here, at land that belonged to the Choshu domain. The shrine, rebuilt in 1928, is a calm, gravel-floored precinct with a replica of the tiny Shoka Sonjuku schoolhouse where he taught in Hagi. Students still come to pray before exams. The real draw for locals, though, is the 300-metre shopping street linking the shrine to Shoin-jinja-mae Station. It still has a fishmonger and a tatami maker, and since the 2010s a wave of small independent shops has opened there. There are third-wave coffee stands, a much-loved bakery, natural-wine bistros and Japanese-sweet cafés, all on a street a quick walk from the tram stop. It is the kind of place Tokyoites pick for a slow Sunday morning.
