Shin-Bungeiza 新文芸坐
Ikebukuro's beloved 264-seat repertory house, known for themed retrospectives, 35mm prints and Saturday all-night screenings.
About
Successor to the post-war Bungeiza, Shin-Bungeiza programmes classic and recent films from Japan and abroad in constantly changing themed series, with 35mm and 16mm projectors alongside 4K laser projection. Its all-night marathons are a Tokyo film-lover institution. Time Out ranked it No. 52 among the world's 100 greatest cinemas in 2026. Foreign films are normally screened in the original language with Japanese subtitles (look for 字幕 on the schedule, not 吹替 = dubbed); Japanese films are usually shown without English subtitles.
