Shimizudani Park 清水谷公園

A sunken, spring-fed woodland pocket below the Kioicho hotels, with a carp pond, stone lanterns and the monument to Meiji statesman Okubo Toshimichi, silent at lunchtime even in the heart of Chiyoda.

About

Tucked in a dip of land between Akasaka-mitsuke and the Tokyo Garden Terrace Kioicho tower, Shimizudani ('clear-water valley') once held a natural spring and is now a mossy little park with a pond, a stream and huge zelkova trees. The towering stone memorial to Okubo Toshimichi marks the place where the Meiji leader was assassinated nearby in 1878. Office workers come to eat bento on the benches, and in early spring the azaleas and cherries frame the pond, but you rarely meet a tourist. It pairs naturally with a walk along the Benkei-bori moat and its rental boats.
