Benkei Bridge 弁慶橋
A wooden-railed bridge with Edo-style giboshi finials over the old castle moat of Benkeibori, beside Akasaka and the Tokyo Garden Terrace towers.
About
Benkei-bashi was originally an Edo-period bridge over the Aizome River in Kanda, named after the master carpenter Benkei Kozaemon. When that river was filled in, the bridge was rebuilt here over the Edo Castle outer moat in 1889, reusing old giboshi (onion-shaped finials) from bridges such as Sujikai-bashi and Asakusabashi. The current concrete bridge (1985) keeps wooden railings and the old-style finials, which makes it a favourite photo spot, especially with the moat's rental boats and fishing pond below and the cherry and autumn colours along Benkeibori.
Highlights
- Edo-style wooden railings and giboshi finials
- Rowing boats and fishing on the Benkeibori moat
- Cherry blossoms and autumn leaves along the moat
- Next to Akasaka-mitsuke and Tokyo Garden Terrace Kioicho
Tips
- Rent a rowing boat or try the fishing pond at Benkei Fishing (check current operation before going).
- Spring cherry blossoms and late November leaves are the prettiest times.
- Combine with Hie Shrine's torii tunnel, 10 min south.
