About

Opened by Tokyu in 1979, SHIBUYA109 (the name is a pun on To-kyu, 'ten-nine') was designed by Takeyama Minoru as a slim silver tower with a cylindrical prow that splits Dogenzaka from Bunkamura-dori. In the 1990s it became the epicentre of gyaru culture, with deeply tanned shop staff, platform boots and trends that spread nationwide from these narrow floors, and it has kept reinventing itself as a trend lab for teen and twenty-something women's fashion ever since. Even if you never shop here, the illuminated '109' cylinder with its big screen is one of the essential sights of Shibuya, just across the scramble from Hachiko. Inside, ten floors of small boutiques stay packed on weekends, with a basement food floor and pop-up events tied to anime and idol groups.
