Shiba Park 芝公園
One of Japans oldest public parks, wrapped around Zojo-ji temple at the foot of Tokyo Tower, with lawns, a maple valley and an ancient burial mound.
About
Shiba Park was designated in 1873 as one of Japans first public parks and spreads in several sections around Zojo-ji, the Tokugawa family temple. Its lawns give some of the best ground-level views of Tokyo Tower, especially when the tower is lit at night. The wooded hill holds the Shiba Maruyama Kofun burial mound and the Momiji-dani maple valley with a small waterfall, and there are cherry and plum trees in season. It is free and open around the clock.
Highlights
- Lawns with close-up views of Tokyo Tower
- Zojo-ji temple and its Tokugawa mausoleum next door
- Momiji-dani maple valley with a small waterfall
- Shiba Maruyama Kofun, a 5th-century burial mound on the hill
Tips
- Come at dusk to see Tokyo Tower light up from the lawn.
- Combine with Zojo-ji: the main gate is a 3 minute walk away.
- Plum blossoms appear in February, cherry blossoms at the end of March.
