About

Sazae-san began as a newspaper comic strip by Hasegawa Machiko in 1946 and has been a Sunday-evening TV anime since 1969, recognised as the longest-running animated TV series in the world. Hasegawa lived in Sakura-shinmachi in Setagaya, and in 2012 the local shopping associations installed 12 bronze statues of the Isono family around the station: Sazae, Masuo and little Tarao, Katsuo, Wakame, father Namihei, mother Fune and Tama the cat. The family stands together by the station exits, while another Sazae greets visitors on Sazae-san Dori, the street leading to the Hasegawa Machiko Art Museum, which shows her collection and an exhibition on Sazae-san. In spring the avenue is lined with cherry blossoms.
