About

Ohako stands on Kan-nana avenue between Nogata and Koenji and has been making its own noodles by hand since it opened in the Showa era (the shop is usually dated to 1976). The noodles are kneaded with a thick bamboo pole, the old aodake-uchi technique, which gives them a bouncy, irregular texture. The broth combines pork and chicken bones with dried seafood and kombu, light but full of flavour. Regulars rave about the chashu-men and, in summer, the hiyashi chuka and cold tantanmen. It is a classic machi-chuka with set meals too, a good reason to explore the quieter Seibu Shinjuku Line neighbourhoods.
