About

Formerly the film centre of MOMAT, the National Film Archive of Japan became an independent national institution in 2018. Its 7th-floor gallery has a permanent exhibition, Nihon Eiga: The History of Japanese Film, with early projectors, posters, scripts and costumes covering silent pictures, the golden age of Kurosawa, Ozu and Mizoguchi, and anime; special exhibitions cover directors, studios and film design. From Aug 11 to Dec 13, 2026 the gallery marks 70 years since Kenji Mizoguchi's death with a retrospective drawing on materials from his longtime crew. Downstairs, the 310-seat Hall and a smaller theatre run themed retrospectives of restored prints most days, an inexpensive way to see Japanese classics on film.
