Namiyoke Inari Shrine Lion Heads 波除稲荷神社 獅子頭
A small Tsukiji shrine guarded by two enormous carved lion heads, a striking and slightly surreal close-up next to the outer market.
About
Namiyoke Inari sits at the edge of the Tsukiji Outer Market, and inside its grounds are two giant lion heads: the black-maned male Tenjo Ojishi in its own hall and the female Ohaguro Shishi with a jewel in a separate shrine. Stand at the front of each hall and shoot straight on to fill the frame with the face, or step back to include the red torii and lanterns. Morning light is soft and the outer market crowds have not peaked yet. This is an active shrine: bow at the gate, do not climb onto the platforms, and keep voices down.
Highlights
- Two giant carved lion heads, each in its own hall
- Red torii and lanterns for context
- Steps from the Tsukiji Outer Market food stalls
- Shrine stamp (goshuin) available
Tips
- Go early morning before the market crowds, then eat breakfast at the outer market.
- Do not use flash at close range on the carvings.
- In June the lion heads are carried through the streets during the Tsukiji Shishi Festival.
