Nakano Broadway 中野ブロードウェイ
A faded 1966 shopping arcade whose upper floors have become a labyrinth of collector shops, Mandarake's empire of vintage manga, toys and cels, plus watch dealers, idol photos and capsule-toy dens. Less touristy than Akiba and more interesting.
About
Walk the covered Nakano Sun Mall from Nakano Station's north exit and you arrive at Nakano Broadway, a retro residential-commercial complex. The ground floor is everyday food and shops; floors 2 to 4 are pure otaku archaeology. Mandarake runs over two dozen specialised branches here, vintage Sofubi, anime cels, doujinshi, cosplay, retro toys, and dozens of independent shops sell vintage watches, figures, trading cards, idol goods and tin toys. The redevelopment plan for the site has been repeatedly delayed, so the building is still open and buzzing. Prices are often fairer than Akihabara.
