About

Musashi Mitake Shrine has crowned Mt. Mitake for well over a thousand years and was a major centre of mountain worship, with a village of shukubo (pilgrim lodges) still clustered below it. Its guardian is Oguchi Magami, a sacred wolf said to have guided the legendary prince Yamato Takeru out of the mountain mist; because of this, the shrine is now a pilgrimage spot for dog owners, who bring their dogs (on leads) for blessings and buy dog-protection charms. The vermilion main hall sits at the top of a long stone stairway, with sweeping views east toward the Kanto Plain. The shrine owns a National Treasure, the late-Heian Akaito-odoshi armour, and its treasure hall opens on weekends and holidays. Traditional rites include the Futomani deer-bone divination on January 3 and the May 8 Hinode festival. Trails continue to the Rock Garden mossy valley and Nanayo Falls.
