About

Marunouchi's first office building, designed by British architect Josiah Conder in 1894, was demolished in 1968 and rebuilt brick by brick to the original plans in 2010. Inside, the galleries keep the scale of Meiji-era offices: creaky-feeling wooden floors, fireplaces, narrow corridors and windows onto a lush courtyard garden framed by skyscrapers. The museum focuses on art from roughly the time the building was born, around 1850 to 1910, and stages about three exhibitions a year; its own collection includes all of Toulouse-Lautrec's posters, Redon's large pastel Grand Bouquet and Vallotton prints. After a long maintenance closure it reopened in November 2024. From Oct 17, 2026 to Jan 24, 2027 it shows Antonio Fontanesi, the Italian landscape painter who taught Western painting in Meiji Japan. Café 1894, in the former banking hall with its tall columns, is a destination in its own right.
