Marunouchi Naka-dori Avenue 丸の内仲通り
A tree-lined, stone-paved boulevard between the Marunouchi towers that looks like a European high street, especially when the trees glow champagne gold in winter.
About
Stand in the middle of the crosswalks around Marunouchi 2 and 3-chome and shoot north along the avenue: the line of zelkova trees, brand boutiques and the glass towers converge into a neat vanishing point. From November to February the trees carry around a million champagne-gold LEDs for the Marunouchi Illumination, and at lunchtime on many days the road is closed to cars as the Marunouchi Naka-dori Urban Terrace, letting you shoot from the centre line. Blue hour just after sunset gives the best balance between the lights and the sky. It is a busy business district, so keep tripods folded and step aside for office workers.
Highlights
- Symmetrical tree-lined vanishing point between the towers
- Champagne-gold winter illumination (about November to February)
- Car-free Urban Terrace hours when you can shoot from the road
- Public art sculptures dotted along the pavement
Tips
- Shoot from the crosswalk islands only when the signal is red for cars, never from the open road when traffic runs.
- Blue hour (15 to 30 minutes after sunset) beats full darkness for sky colour.
- Tripods are not welcome on the busy pavement in illumination season; use a high ISO.
