About

Designed by Rafael Viñoly and opened in 1997, the Tokyo International Forum is a convention and concert complex between Yurakucho and Tokyo stations. Its showpiece is the Glass Building: a 210 m-long, 60 m-tall atrium with curved glass walls and a roof hung from a single ribbed steel truss that looks like the skeleton of a boat. Slender skybridges cross the void at different heights and a ramp spirals up the inside. The public spaces are free to walk, and photographers come for the symmetry: lie the camera on the ground floor and shoot straight up at the truss, or climb to the upper walkways and shoot down the length of the hall. At night the glass glows like a lantern, and the tree-lined plaza outside hosts antiques and food markets.
