About

Maman (1999) is one of six casts of Louise Bourgeois's monumental spider, a tribute to her mother, a tapestry restorer: protective, patient and a weaver like the spider. It has stood in the 66 Plaza of Roppongi Hills since the complex opened in 2003, tall enough to walk beneath and look up at the sac of marble eggs suspended from its abdomen. With the glass Mori Tower soaring behind it and Tokyo Tower visible from the nearby terrace, it's a favourite photo spot by day and dramatic at night when uplit.
