About

American pop artist Robert Indiana's LOVE design, with its stacked letters and leaning O, became one of the most reproduced images of the 1960s, and versions of the sculpture stand in cities from New York to Philadelphia. Tokyo's version was installed in 1995 as part of the public art programme of Shinjuku I-Land, a complex that also includes works by Roy Lichtenstein and others scattered around its plazas. Couples line up for pictures, and the local lore says that passing through the gaps of the letters brings luck in love. It sits a short walk from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building and is a fun counterpoint to the serious corporate towers around it.
