About

Komagata Dozeu opened in 1801. Its founder came to Edo from Musashi Province as a young man and, after years of service, opened a cheap eatery selling loach soup and loach hotpot. Loach (dojo) was cheap, nourishing food for Edo's working people, simmered in shallow iron pans with sweet miso and piled with chopped spring onion. The restaurant still serves it that way. Downstairs, guests sit on a raised wooden floor along long boards that serve as tables, an old Edo style of seating; upstairs are tatami rooms. The sign uses the spelling 'dozeu' in three kana instead of the standard four: after the shop burned in the great fire of 1806, the founder is said to have had it rewritten, because four ('shi', which can mean death) was thought unlucky.
