Kisho Jinja (Weather Shrine) 気象神社

Japan's only shrine dedicated to the weather. It is a tiny sub-shrine inside Koenji Hikawa Shrine, right next to Koenji Station, where people leave geta-sandal-shaped ema plaques praying for sunshine on wedding days, festivals and exam trips.

About

Kisho Jinja was founded in 1944 inside the Imperial Army's weather-forecasting school in Koenji, to pray for accurate forecasts during the war. When the base closed after the war it was moved to the grounds of Koenji Hikawa Shrine. It is said to be the only weather shrine in Japan. Its wooden ema are shaped like geta sandals, a nod to the children's game of tossing a sandal to forecast tomorrow's weather. Brides, festival organisers, couples planning outdoor weddings and anime fans of the film Weathering With You, which features it, hang them by the hundred. The annual festival on 1 June is Japan's Weather Day. It takes only a few minutes to see, but it is a perfectly Koenji kind of eccentric spot, one minute from the station.
