Koenji 高円寺
Punk, thrift and izakaya: a scrappy, friendly Chuo Line town of covered shopping streets, live venues, vintage stores and cheap bars under the tracks.
About
Koenji is grittier and cheaper than Shimokitazawa, with a counterculture lineage (the 'Shiroto no Ran' amateur revolt collective, punk bars, Koenji Awa Odori festival). Explore Look Street and Pal Shotengai for vintage, the alleys under the JR tracks for standing bars, and the side streets for record stores and second-hand bookshops. Kosugiyu sento is a 5-minute walk north. In late August the Awa Odori dance festival brings 10,000 dancers onto the streets.
