Kappabashi Kitchen Town かっぱ橋道具街
An 800m street with 170 shops selling everything a restaurant needs, hand-forged Japanese knives, ceramics, lacquerware and the famous plastic food samples. Look for the giant chef's head on the Niimi building.
About
Kappabashi-dori, between Ueno and Asakusa, supplies Tokyo's restaurant trade and is a treasure trove for cooks. Specialist knife shops (Kamata, Kama-asa, Tsubaya) sell Japanese chef knives with engraving services and English-speaking staff; ceramics stores sell rice bowls and sake cups by the stack; others sell copper pots, noren curtains, bento boxes and paper lanterns. Shops such as Ganso Shokuhin Sample-ya sell realistic plastic food replicas (and run workshops to make your own). The Niimi Building's giant chef bust marks the south end.
