About

Formally Kanda Shrine, Kanda Myojin has watched over Edo and Tokyo's commercial heart since 730. Its 1934 vermilion main hall was one of the first Shinto shrines built in reinforced concrete, which is why it survived the 1945 air raids. Three deities are enshrined, including the rebel samurai Taira no Masakado. Today Akihabara and Kanda businesses come to pray for success, you can buy IT-protection amulets for electronics, and the shrine has embraced its otaku neighbour: Love Live! and other anime collaborations fill the ema racks with hand-drawn characters. The EDOCCO culture centre has a café and souvenir shop, and the Kanda Matsuri in mid-May of odd-numbered years is one of Edo's three great festivals.
