About

Founded in 1662 and modelled on Dazaifu Tenmangu in Kyushu, Kameido Tenjin is a shrine to Sugawara no Michizane, the god of learning, and one of the most beautiful flower spots in Tokyo. Its grounds surround a pond crossed by two vermilion taikobashi drum bridges, the Otokobashi and Onnabashi. Every late April and early May, around 100 wisteria vines on 15 trellises hang purple curtains over the water, with Tokyo Skytree framed behind, the view Hiroshige made famous. The Fuji Matsuri wisteria festival brings stalls and evening light-ups. In winter the Ume Matsuri sees around 300 plum trees bloom (roughly February to early March), and in January the quirky Usokae ritual lets you swap wooden bullfinch figures to "exchange last year's bad luck for lies".
