About

Eagle is one of the longest-running jazz kissa (jazz listening cafés) in Tokyo, owned by jazz critic Masahiro Goto. Down a staircase off Shinjuku-dori, the dim room faces enormous JBL speakers; records are played whole, side by side, at a volume you feel in your chest. During the day it is a listening room where talking is discouraged; in the evening it shifts into a jazz bar where conversation is fine. It is the real thing: the culture that inspired the 'listening bars' now copied worldwide.
