Iseya Koen-ten (Kichijoji) いせや 公園店

A smoky, cheap and cheerful yakitori institution on the steps down to Inokashira Park, run by the Iseya family business that dates back to 1928. Locals line up for skewers grilled on the street-side grill, big shumai and cold beer, often with the park still in view.

About

Iseya has been feeding Kichijoji since the early Showa era. Its main shop near the station was rebuilt in 2013, but the Koen-ten (park branch) on the slope down to Inokashira Park is the one with the atmosphere. Skewers are grilled over charcoal in the window, smoke drifts over the passing crowd, and inside are crowded tables of students, pensioners and families with a beer after a park walk. Skewers are cheap. Regulars order a set of yakitori, the giant homemade shumai and stewed motsu, with draught beer or a highball. It is unpretentious, loud and a much-loved part of everyday Kichijoji life.
