Hossawa Falls 払沢の滝

The only waterfall in Tokyo on Japan's list of 100 best waterfalls. It is a 60 m, four-tiered cascade in a mossy forest at the end of a short, easy trail in Hinohara, Tokyo's last village on the main island. In very cold winters it freezes solid.

About

Hinohara is the only "village" left on mainland Tokyo, a mountainous place of cedar forests and old farmhouses an hour's bus ride from the city. Its most famous sight, Hossawa Falls, is reached by a 15-minute walk up a forested stream path from the bus stop, past a tofu shop and a café. The falls drop 60 metres in four tiers, though only the bottom tier of about 26 m is visible from the viewing area. It is cool, green and refreshing in summer. In exceptionally cold winters the falls freeze, and the village runs a "freeze contest" to predict the date. Local legend says a giant serpent lives in the basin. Pick up some Hinohara tofu or a bag of local konnyaku on the way back down.
