Harajuku Gyoza-ro 原宿餃子楼
A no-frills gyoza joint on a Harajuku backstreet where you choose between pan-fried and boiled dumplings, with or without garlic, and that's almost the whole menu. Cheap, fast and permanently busy.
Typical meal with beer: ¥1,500
About
Gyoza-ro is a Harajuku staple and a popular cheap eat for both locals and visitors exploring Omotesando and Cat Street. The menu is famously short: plates of six gyoza, either yaki (pan-fried with crisp bottoms) or sui (boiled and slippery), each available with or without garlic and chives. Add a side of cucumber, bean sprouts with spicy miso or rice, and a cold beer, and you have one of Tokyo's best-value meals. Diners sit around an open kitchen counter where cooks fry gyoza in huge pans. There's usually a line at peak times, but turnover is quick.
Highlights
- Plates of six crisp-bottomed yaki gyoza for a few hundred yen
- Silky boiled sui gyoza as the lighter alternative
- Garlic or no-garlic versions of each
- Counter seats around an open kitchen of sizzling pans
- Simple sides like spicy bean sprouts and cucumber
Tips
- Order one plate of each style to compare, per person, two plates is usual
- Off-peak (14:00–17:00) means little or no line
- Mix soy, vinegar and chilli oil yourself; locals go heavy on vinegar
- It's a quick meal, don't linger at peak times
