About

Hama-rikyu was built in the 17th century as a seaside villa for the Tokugawa shoguns, then became an imperial detached palace. Its Shioiri-no-ike pond is fed by seawater from Tokyo Bay, rising and falling with the tide, and is home to sea fish. A long cypress bridge leads to Nakajima-no-Ochaya, a rebuilt teahouse on stilts where you can sip matcha over the water while Shiodome's skyscrapers loom behind, one of Tokyo's best old-new contrasts. Elsewhere are a 300-year-old black pine, duck-hunting blinds, fields of rape blossoms in March and cosmos in autumn. Water buses run from Hama-rikyu up the Sumida River to Asakusa.
