Hakone-yama (Toyama Park) 箱根山(戸山公園)
The highest natural point inside the Yamanote loop at 44.6 m, a man-made hill from a daimyo's garden folly, with a summit you can bag in three minutes and a certificate to prove it.
About
In the Edo period the Owari Tokugawa clan built a huge pleasure garden here, Toyama-so, complete with an artificial mountain they called Hakone. The garden vanished but the hill remains in Toyama Park, wooded and quiet, and its 44.6 m peak is officially the highest point in the Yamanote loop. Tokyoites climb it for a laugh and the view through the trees; the nearby Toyama Sports Center office hands out free 'climbing certificates'. The surrounding woods are full of birds and history, including old army school ruins.
