About

Kyodo-no-mori (Hometown Forest) spreads over about 14 hectares of riverside parkland in southern Fuchu. The main museum tells the story of the ancient Musashi provincial capital that was here, but the real draw is outdoors. Relocated and restored buildings include the 1921 Fuchu Town Hall, a Meiji-era schoolhouse, merchant houses and thatched farmhouses, with paths through water gardens and woods between them. The plum garden of about 1,100 trees makes the February–March Ume Matsuri a big local event, including evening illuminations. In summer children wade in the stream. A planetarium shows regular programmes, with simple explanation in Japanese. Very few visitors from abroad find it.
