About

Japanese horse racing is a spectacle even for non-gamblers. Tokyo Racecourse hosts the country's richest races, the Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) in late May/early June, the Autumn Tenno Sho in late October and the Japan Cup in late November, and its grandstands hold well over 100,000. On race days, entry costs just ¥200, and the facilities are excellent: food courts, a racing museum, a big infield park with playgrounds, and one of the largest video screens in the world. You can bet from ¥100 using mark sheets at the machines (staff can help, and English guides are available), and the paddock lets you see the horses up close before each race. Racing runs mostly on weekends during the Tokyo meetings (spring and autumn); on other weekends the track opens as an off-track betting venue with free entry.
