Former Maeda Family Residence 旧前田家本邸
A 1929 English Tudor-style mansion of the Kaga Maeda lords, with a Japanese wing and garden, in Komaba Park, an Important Cultural Property that is free to walk through.
About
When the Maeda family, once the richest daimyo in Japan, moved to Komaba, Marquis Maeda Toshinari built this lavish Western house in English Tudor style, complete with chandeliers, carved fireplaces, a grand staircase and period wallpaper, plus a separate Japanese-style wing with a strolling garden. Restored in the 2010s, both are free to visit and gloriously empty on weekdays. It sits in the woods of Komaba Park, next door to the University of Tokyo's Komaba campus and the Museum of Modern Japanese Literature.
