About

Kimono rentals are everywhere in Asakusa, but full transformations are rarer. COCOMO, a two-minute walk from Asakusa Station's Exit 1, does both. The regular rental gets you a dressed-and-styled kimono for strolling Senso-ji. The main event is the henshin (transformation) experience: a make-up artist paints the classic white oshiroi face with red and black accents, fits a heavy traditional wig, and dresses you in layered maiko or geisha robes, or the elaborate costume of an Edo-era oiran. Most visitors then do an indoor photo session; some plans add an outdoor shoot around the temple. It is theatrical rather than authentic, real maiko are apprentices in Kyoto, but it is a memorable, well-run experience that suits couples, mothers and daughters and anyone celebrating. English is spoken and card payment is accepted. Allow two to three hours for a makeover, and note that last entry is three hours before closing.
