About
Daienji sits halfway down Gyoninzaka, the steep slope west of Meguro Station, and is known for its hillside of about 520 stone rakan and other Buddhist statues. They were carved to mourn the victims of the Great Meiwa Fire of 1772, which started near here and burned much of Edo. The temple is also one of Edo's three great Daikoku temples and a stop on the Yamate Seven Lucky Gods pilgrimage.
