Bar Lupin ルパン
A 1928 basement bar down a Ginza back alley where Dazai Osamu, Sakaguchi Ango and Oda Sakunosuke drank, the famous photo of Dazai on the stool was taken here.
Table charge: ¥1,000
About
Down a narrow lane off Ginza 5-chome and a steep flight of stairs, Lupin has served writers, artists and salarymen since 1928. Literary Japan knows it from Hayashi Tadahiko's 1946 photographs of Dazai Osamu perched on a bar stool and of Sakaguchi Ango, both taken in this room, and it has found new fans through the anime 'Bungo Stray Dogs'. The counter, wood panelling and coat hooks feel like a 1950s time capsule. Bartenders mix classic cocktails, the Gimlet and 'Lupin' house drinks are the orders, in a calm, polite atmosphere where everyone speaks quietly.
