Asakusabashi Bridge 浅草橋
The Kanda River bridge on Edo-dori where the Asakusa gate of Edo Castle once stood, rebuilt in 1930 and lined with yakatabune boats below.
About
Asakusabashi carried the Nikko and Oshu highways out of Edo and was guarded by the Asakusa Gate, one of the outer gates of Edo Castle. In 1873 it became a stone bridge built by the famous Higo stonemasons, and the current bridge dates from the 1930 earthquake reconstruction. A stone marker for the old gate stands at the south end. Today it is the gateway to Asakusabashi's doll, bead and craft wholesalers, and the river below is packed with moored yakatabune boats.
