About

Founded by Bridgestone tyre magnate Shojiro Ishibashi, the Artizon Museum (the name blends 'art' and 'horizon') holds about 3,000 works ranging from Monet, Renoir, Cezanne and Picasso to Japanese Western-style painters like Aoki Shigeru, plus abstract expressionism and contemporary Japanese art. The 2020 building, a cool high-ceilinged series of galleries over the fourth to sixth floors of a Kyobashi tower, is one of the most comfortable museums in Tokyo: quiet, spacious, with good benches. Exhibitions mix the Ishibashi Foundation Collection with themed shows, and photography of collection works is generally permitted. Timed online booking keeps crowds low.
