About
Aoyama Cemetery opened in 1874 as Japan's first public cemetery and holds the graves of many Meiji-era figures and a foreigners' section. Its main avenue is lined with old cherry trees whose branches meet overhead in spring, framing the skyline of Roppongi and Akasaka. Because it is a cemetery, visitors stroll and photograph rather than hold hanami parties.
