Ura Namba 裏なんば
The tangle of backstreets east of Namba where Osaka's best small izakaya, standing bars and natural wine counters are packed into every alley. Where locals go when Dotonbori is too loud.
About
Ura Namba ('back Namba') covers the blocks around Sennichimae Doguyasuji and Nipponbashi, roughly between Namba Grand Kagetsu and Kuromon. Since the 2010s it has filled with tiny counter bars specialising in oysters, yakitori, oden, fish, natural wine and craft sake, many seating fewer than 10 people. The best approach is to hop: one drink and a dish per place, then move on. Many places offer small cover charges (otoshi) and cheap highballs. It comes alive from about 18:00.
Highlights
- Dozens of tiny standing bars and izakaya
- Specialists in oysters, oden, yakitori and natural wine

Tips
- Do a crawl: one drink and one dish per bar
- Expect an otoshi cover charge of a few hundred yen
- Many bars have no English menus: point at what others are eating
- Friday nights are packed; Tuesday-Thursday is easier
