About

Tamatsukuri was once the district of jewel makers who supplied magatama beads to the ancient court, and this shrine to Inari, god of harvest and commerce, has stood here for well over a thousand years. Under the Toyotomi it fell within Osaka Castle's outer defences and was protected by Hideyori, whose statue and a stone torii he donated (damaged in the 1995 earthquake and now displayed) survive. In the Edo period it was the departure point for the Ise pilgrimage, and a stone marks the start of the route. A small museum in the grounds tells the history of the Tamatsukuri area and its gem-making. The shrine is quiet, with red Inari gates, fox statues and a good goshuin, and is a pleasant detour on the less-visited southeast side of the castle.
