About

Kishiwada was the seat of the Okabe clan through the Edo period; its original five-storey keep burned in 1827 and the present three-storey tower was rebuilt in 1954. It stands on a stone platform ringed by a broad moat lined with cherry trees, and its nickname Chikiri-jo comes from the shape of the bailey, like a loom part. The real gem is the Hachijin no Niwa, a modernist stone garden created by Shigemori Mirei in 1953 around the keeps base: eight groupings of rocks represent the battle formations of the Chinese strategist Zhuge Liang, best appreciated from the keeps upper floors. Inside are armour and exhibits on the Danjiri Matsuri, the September festival in which huge wooden carts are hauled at full speed around corners by hundreds of runners. Kishiwada is about 25 minutes from Namba and makes an easy half-day trip, or a stop on the way to Kansai Airport.
