About
Muroji lies in a mountain valley and, unlike Mount Koya, admitted women from early times. Stone steps lead through cedar forest past the Kondo and a 16 m five-storied pagoda, both National Treasures. The setting is especially photogenic with rhododendrons in spring and maples in autumn.
Highlights
- 16 m five-storied pagoda, the smallest outdoor one in Japan
- Kondo with Heian-period Buddhist statues
- Inner sanctuary reached by about 700 stone steps
- Rhododendrons in late April
Tips
- Bus from Kintetsu Muroguchi-Ono Station runs infrequently; check times
- Allow time for the steep climb to the Okunoin
- Combine with Hasedera on the same Kintetsu line
