About
The Ritz-Carlton opened in 2014 on Nijo-Ohashi, between the river and Kiyamachi, on the site of the Hotel Fujita and, before that, a villa of the 17th-century merchant family that dug the Takase canal. The hotel was restricted to four storeys to respect Kyoto's height rules and the riverside view; its facade uses horizontal bands and lattice inspired by traditional townhouses. Inside, the entrance passes a stone waterfall wall and Nishijin weaving art, and the Japanese restaurant Mizuki is built around the preserved Meiji-period Ebisugawa-tei villa and garden. Rooms facing east look across the river to Higashiyama and, in August, to the Daimonji bonfire.
