Takase River Ichinofunairi 高瀬川 一之船入
The original boat basin of the Takase canal, dug in the early 1600s, where a replica flat-bottomed takase-bune sits moored under willows and cherry trees.
About
Ichinofunairi on Kiyamachi-dori near Nijo is the last surviving loading inlet of the Takase River canal built by merchant Suminokura Ryoi to carry goods into the city, and is a national historic site. Stand on the Kiyamachi side and shoot down at the replica wooden boat on the shallow water, framed by willow fronds and the old stone edges. In early April the cherry trees along the canal make this one of central Kyoto's prettiest spring frames, and it is quiet at any hour.
Highlights
- Replica takase-bune cargo boat on the water
- National historic site from the early Edo period
- Cherry blossom and willows along the canal
- Quiet start to a walk south down Kiyamachi
Tips
- Shoot from street level: there is no access down to the water.
- Follow the canal south toward Sanjo for more blossom and lantern frames.
- Nights are good for reflections of Kiyamachi's lights.
