About

Smart Coffee opened in 1932 and still roasts its own beans in a vintage roaster. The ground floor is a coffee room with wooden booths and chandeliers; the lunch room upstairs serves omurice and other yoshoku dishes. The star is the hotcake set, two thick, golden pancakes with butter and syrup, and the eggy French toast. It is a favourite of Kyoto's retro-cafe fans and is famously said to have been visited by John Lennon and Yoko Ono.
