Ramen & Noodles · Kyoto Station (Takabashi)
Shinpuku Saikan Honten 新福菜館 本店
Since 1938, Kyoto's iconic black ramen: an almost ink-dark soy broth that tastes far lighter than it looks, served next to its rival Daiichi Asahi near Kyoto Station.
About
Shinpuku Saikan is one of the founding names of Kyoto ramen. Its broth is pork and chicken-based with a very dark soy tare, topped with chashu and Kujo green onion, plus thick, firm noodles. The other must-order is yakimeshi, fried rice also blackened with the same soy. The no-frills shop sits on Takabashi, a five-minute walk east of Kyoto Station, right next door to Honke Daiichi Asahi, so many visitors try both on one trip.
